Characteristics

Tiffany is a small, close-knit neighborhood, with residents dedicated to working together to improve and beautify their community. Tiffany Park serves as a gathering place for children and adults. Tiffany’s central location offers easy access to Saint Louis University, Grand Center and the restaurants on South Grand, with easy access to Interstate 44, Interstate 40 and downtown St. Louis.

History

The Tiffany neighborhood was first developed in the 1890s as the first streetcar suburb in south St. Louis. Real estate promoters Thomas and Samuel Scott auctioned off a tract of land west of Grand known as Dundee Place, touting the area as a suburban haven for families, free from the crowded, polluted city core but with convenient public transit to the city. Trolley, cable car lines, and railroad tracks made possible the boast that “no subdivision in the City has so many lines running into the business center.” In the first decade, mostly single-family homes were built to attract middle-class families, with multi-family buildings becoming more common after 1900 in response to the growing need for housing for construction and factory workers.

The huge Liggett & Myer Tobacco Company complex, the “world’s largest” tobacco factory, was built in the northern sector of Dundee Place in the late 1890s, followed by the Wellman-Twire Tobacco Company, the Huttig Sash and Door Co., the Koken Iron Co., the yards and shops of the Missouri Pacific Railroad, and the new headquarters of the United Railway Co.
