Shriners Hospital’s Board of Directors has endorsed moving the hospital back to the Washington University Medical Center campus. The $170 million hospital will be built at 4400 Clayton Avenue, between Taylor and Newstead, currently home to a parking lot and the former Pepsi Bottling Co. plant.
The move will allow the hospital, which provides free orthopedic care to children, better access to specialists at Washington University School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital. The 247,000-square foot building will feature 40 inpatient beds, four surgical suites, 30 examination rooms, a 260-space parking garage and an entire floor dedicated to research.
Construction on the building, designed by Gresham Smith & Partners, is expected to begin in spring 2009, with completion slated for 2012. The current St. Louis Shriners Hospital, located at 2001 S. Lindbergh Blvd., will be sold once construction of the new hospital is completed.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Shriners Hospital is scheduled for Thursday, July 3.
