Chouteau Park

What's your vision for a perfect neighborhood park?

That's what Forest Park Southeast community members were asked at two park planning workshops hosted by 17th Ward Alderman Joe Roddy July 22 and November 11 at Herbert Hoover Boys and Girls Club Adams Park Unit.

At the July workshop, John Hoal of H3 Studio, author of the master plan for Forest Park, led a presentation showing three alternative plans for a new park to be located on three acres between Chouteau, Newstead, Tower Grove and Interstate 64. Each version featured different site grading, from a contoured landscape to a sloping hill to a level design. Some of the amenities being considered include a playground, multi-purpose field, amphitheater, walking path, seating area, water feature and a restaurant/community hall. Workshop participants met in groups to discuss and offer feedback on the plans.

At the November public meeting, Hoal revealed the design for the park, which incorporates elements from the three original versions. The plan includes an interactive playground, a water spray feature, a promenade, a multi-purpose field, a gentle hill, a walking trail and a shady grove that may eventually house a small restaurant. Most meeting attendees expressed strong approval for the park plans. Some voiced concerns about security and maintenance, while others expressed interest in a skate park or off-leash dog area.

Environmental remediation and site grading will likely start in spring 2010, with park amenities installed in phases as funding becomes available.

An advisory committee of neighborhood residents has been meeting for several months to brainstorm ideas for the park.
The St. Louis Department of Parks, Recreation and  Forestry has also been involved in the planning process. The city of St. Louis purchased the land where the park will be located as part of the deal involving the long-term lease of Hudlin Park to Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
